"
For the Traditional Communities Forum, it is very valuable to have recorded this knowledge, mainly because it is based on the struggle of our social movement, which brings together caiçaras, indigenous people and quilombolas to work together to defend their rights and territories. It is important that it is something that makes sense to us, to the traditional communities, and this is the case with this library."
Vagner do Nascimento - FCT Coordinator

"
The Bocaina Social Technology Library consolidates the knowledge gained through the 15-year alliance between Fiocruz and the Traditional Communities Forum to promote sustainable and healthy territories on the northern coast of São Paulo and the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro. It is a great joy for us to launch this library and share this knowledge with those who are also seeking to advance the promotion of well-being for traditional communities in their territories.
Edmundo Gallo - OTSS Coordinator
ON
Funded with resources from the Terra 2030 Public Notice, promoted by Fiocruz in conjunction with the Higher School of Advertising and Marketing (ESPM) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Bocaina Social Technologies Library brings together 40 Social Technologies developed and/or reapplied by Fiocruz and the Traditional Communities Forum (FCT) with indigenous, caiçara and quilombola communities located in Angra dos Reis (RJ), Paraty (RJ) and Ubatuba (SP).
These technologies cover several areas, such as Living Governance, Agroecology, Ecological Sanitation, Community-Based Tourism, Differentiated Education and Socio-Environmental Justice. Each technology is presented in detail, with information on its development, application and results achieved, facilitating reapplication in other contexts.
In addition to making this knowledge available, the library also seeks to strengthen the relationship between traditional communities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda. Therefore, each social technology also includes an indication of the SDG(s) it helps to promote.

"
For us, social technologies, beyond processes, methodologies and products, translate into permanence and articulation, built from the dialogue between scientific and traditional knowledge with the premise of promoting sustainable and healthy territories in the context of traditional peoples and communities."
Sidélia Silva - Coordinator of the OTSS Social Technologies Incubator

"
When we go to communities, we often hear what can’t be done, including in the area of sanitation, but we don’t bring anything concrete to present. Now we can go there and say, ‘Look, it’s possible to do it this way, and this is very important to us.’ The process of change is slow, but it’s happening.”
Francisco Xavier Sobrinho - Caiçara resident of Pouso da Cajaíba and Researcher at ITS/OTSS
SOCIAL TECHNOLOGIES
Social technologies are innovative and practical approaches that seek to solve social problems and improve people's quality of life. Several authors have contributed to the development of this field, bringing different perspectives and concepts, however there is consensus on some attributes.

OTSS INCUBATOR
The OTSS Social Technology Incubator offers support and advice for the development, improvement, implementation and dissemination of innovative solutions that result from the memory, interaction and dialogue of knowledge of traditional communities with which Fiocruz and the Traditional Communities Forum (FCT) work on the south coast of Rio de Janeiro and the north coast of São Paulo.
In effect, the work is developed in dialogue with communities, organizations and partners, with permanent engagement and mobilization of leaders and others involved in all stages of the process.
The fronts of action focus on areas such as agroecology, ecological sanitation, artisanal fishing and Community-Based Tourism (CBT), adapting their methodologies to the specific needs of each context and community.

ACCESSIBILITY
They can be adopted and used by people and communities from different social and economic backgrounds. They must be developed in a way that ensures that they are economically viable and available to those who need them most.
REPLICABILITY
It is possible to adapt and replicate your solutions in different locations and contexts. The idea is that effective solutions developed in a given community can be applied in other communities facing similar problems.
COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
They value the active participation of communities affected by social problems at all stages of the process, from identifying challenges to implementing solutions. Including the voices and perspectives of those involved is considered essential to the success of social technologies.

"
The actions of the OTSS in the Bocaina territory aim to contribute in an integrated way to the advancement of health promotion and sustainable development based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda."
Marcela Cananéa, Coordinator of Socio-Environmental Justice at OTSS

"
"The Library is a central instrument for thinking about the process of local development and integration and of traditional communities and, from the point of view of the 2030 Agenda, meeting the central objective of localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are extremely pleased to be part of this cooperation, knowing that it will undoubtedly generate the replicability of this process in other territories and in other dimensions."
Paulo Gadelha, former president of Fiocruz and coordinator of the Fiocruz Strategy for the 2030 Agenda.

NEXT STEPS
The result of an alliance between Fiocruz and the Traditional Communities Forum (FCT), the OTSS was also selected by the second Terra 2030 call for proposals to implement the "Bocaina Traditional Technologies Library", which aims to preserve, systematize and disseminate secular techniques developed and used by traditional indigenous, caiçara and quilombola communities to promote health and sustainable development.
This initiative represents the deepening of the "Bocaina Social Technologies Library". While the latter focused on Social Technologies reapplied directly by Fiocruz and the Traditional Communities Forum in partnership with indigenous, caiçara and quilombola communities in Angra dos Reis, Paraty and Ubatuba, this initiative now seeks to focus on the registration, systematization and dissemination of secular technologies developed autonomously and directly by these communities. This material should be available by May 2025.

"
Today, in the territory, traditional practices are demonized and then commercialized, both by real estate speculation and by Conservation Units (CUs). Being able to map these practices in a truthful way, listening to those who truly hold the knowledge, is an important tool in the struggle to affirm our people in the territory", highlights Ariane Rosa, member of the Traditional Communities Forum (FCT) and researcher at the OTSS Social Technologies Incubator.
AGENDA 2030
The countries that are part of the United Nations (UN) signed, during Rio+20, a commitment term called Agenda 2030. This agenda contains 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that comprise targets and actions to be achieved by all countries by the year 2030.
In the Bocaina territories, the OTSS works to redefine indicators and create territorialized strategies for evaluating and monitoring the SDGs, taking into account the specificities of traditional communities. This makes it possible to better assess the effectiveness of Fiocruz and FCT actions in promoting the sustainable and healthy development of these communities, since the traditional way of life is in itself harmonious with nature and is not necessarily related to economic and monetary indicators.
